It’s been a couple of years since the FDA approved OTC heartburn medication Nexium and the prescription drug Prevacid, but they’ve been in the news. Today, the Food and Drug Administration announced that the brand-name drug was pulled from the market.
The FDA approved OTC OTC Heartburn in 2004, when Nexium and Prilosec were launched. OTC Prevacid was also available for the first time in 2007. But OTC Prevacid was withdrawn from the market because it caused severe, potentially fatal heartburn.
The FDA has warned that OTC Prevacid could cause permanent damage if not removed from the market.
“This is not the first time that a drug has been pulled from the market,” Dr. Nachum Tumsek, the FDA’s medical director, said in a statement.
The FDA also released a statement saying that it was “resolved” with the withdrawal of Prevacid.
“As a result of the withdrawal of Prevacid, it has been found to cause permanent damage to the esophagus and stomach,” the FDA said. “As a result of this damage, the risk of heartburn is now considered very low.”
Nexium was originally developed as an acid-suppressing drug, but it was later found to be safe and effective for use as an over-the-counter drug. It is now available under the brand name Prevacid.
But the company’s withdrawal was due to a problem with the drug, which the FDA described as “unfair and deceptive” in its warning about the risk of heartburn.
Ozobiprofen, an alternative, was removed from the market for a reason, the FDA said.
The FDA noted that the brand-name drug was still available for OTC use and that it was no longer being used by patients who were taking other prescription medications.
The FDA also said it was concerned that the OTC Prevacid product could be used in patients who have a heart condition known as a heartburn.
“Based on the data presented at the time of the announcement, the FDA believes that there is no basis for its decision to withdraw OTC Prevacid from the market,” the FDA said. “However, we are concerned about the safety and efficacy of OTC Prevacid as a drug for chronic heartburn. We believe that there is a significant safety risk associated with the use of OTC Prevacid and therefore, the safety of this drug is of concern.”
A separate statement from the FDA said the company “is in the process of updating its product information” to inform users of the risks associated with the product.
“We are working with the FDA to provide guidance and information regarding the safety and efficacy of OTC Prevacid in patients with a history of heartburn or a history of heartburn,” the statement said. “We look forward to updating our product information and any updates as they become available.”
The FDA’s warning was that OTC Prevacid can cause permanent damage if not removed from the market, and that a patient taking Prevacid should talk to their healthcare provider if the patient is experiencing symptoms of heartburn.
“This is not the first time that a drug has been withdrawn from the market,” the FDA said.
In June, the FDA said it was investigating whether the company should stop selling Prevacid and other over-the-counter medications.
On July 7, the FDA said it was investigating whether the company should discontinue its OTC Prevacid product.
“We are continuing our investigation of the OTC Prevacid product and evaluating the potential effects that could be anticipated,” the FDA said. “As a result, we recommend that the company discontinue the use of OTC Prevacid and any related products that may become available over-the-counter.”
The FDA did not return requests for comment.
In July, it was announced that the FDA will continue to review the safety of OTC Prevacid, including a study that found that it did not cause serious, permanent damage to the esophagus.On October 14, the FDA announced that the FDA has recommended that OTC Prevacid be withdrawn from the market.
The FDA also announced that it had not recommended that the company discontinue its OTC Prevacid product, citing concerns about the safety of the drug.
